Second
Annual Sea Oats Planting Photos (6.28.10)
On Saturday, June 26th, volunteers gathered on Pass-a-Grille
Beach to plant 5,000 Sea Oat plants. The plants were donated by
the Pinellas County Department of Environmental Management.
"Sea oats are a vital dune plant, which create
beach dunes by collecting blowing sands. As a result, cover
is created for many living organisms. They also provide food
for many of the migrant birds passing through
on their way to the Caribbean and beyond in the fall. This valuable
resource is eroded by the pounding of
tropical storms, hurricanes and beach-going visitors. Planting
of native vegetation like sea oats helps form
and maintain sand dunes, critical to controlling beach erosion."
