Joe Catanzarita

I only knew him for a short time, but he was one of those people who didn't take long to know.

   He made everyone laugh.

I can only marvel that God wanted him so much he tried to take him from us several times. But Joe was a stubborn one. He beat the odds again and again and again and would always reappear at the Seaside Grille after each bout looking a little peaked. But it wouldn't take long, and he'd be wisecracking and getting pissed off again, sometimes just for the hell of it.

He was a good husband, even if a trial by his own admission. He also admitted he had a very good wife who put up with him. He was a good Dad to four children. He was a good friend to many. God tried to get Joe many times and I just kind of think he was after that big old heart of Joe's. Or maybe it was his compassion. Or love. Or the laugh that was always on his face. I don't know. I just wanted Joe to always be here for me when I came to watch the sunset. Give me a hug, give me a joke, offer help when needed.

But God finally said, "Come on Joe, it's time." And Joe went.
I wonder if God knows what he's getting himself into.

We who are left behind will not forget all that Joe was and is.

I know each of us will carry his bright eyes and happy face in our thoughts.

As he looks down on us today, I know he feels pretty good about how many people really loved him.

We ring the bell in honor of Joe, our friend.

He will live in our hearts forever. . .
